Enhancing the New Hire Experience

NEIEP has developed a comprehensive update to its probationary program content, known as the New Hire Program, or NH002. The probationary period marks a critical first step in an Apprentice’s journey, when new hires begin to understand what’s expected of them in the field, in the classroom, and as part of the IUEC. NEIEP’s New Hire Program has long provided the foundation for that experience. Now, after careful review and planning, the program has undergone a major update aimed at improving training quality, accountability, and outcomes for all incoming Apprentices.

A More Structured Start for Apprentices

The probationary course content from NEIEP includes modules on safety, financial tools, customer relations, and a history of the IUEC and labor movements. In the existing program, these modules are released to new Apprentices once a month for six months. Apprentices must complete online exams and then pass a final to complete the program.

The updated course content will include all the current probationary topics, refreshed and expanded, as well as the addition of topics such as mental health and substance abuse awareness, soft skills such as teamwork and conflict resolution, and a comprehensive orientation that will prepare Apprentices for the next four years of their lives as students. The content combines self-paced online coursework with mandatory instructor-led online sessions and will now be delivered once a week instead of once a month, mirroring the NEIEP regular curriculum (RC) classroom schedule.

he program update emphasizes streamlined access to essential information, encouraging Apprentices to take ownership of their learning from the outset. A final course review and survey will provide feedback to help continually refine the program. This initiative marks a significant step forward in aligning apprenticeship training with modern educational standards, as well as creating a robust orientation for new Apprentices.

Better Access, Better Outcomes

Course content will now be available to Instructors and students beyond just those currently enrolled in the probationary period. Locals are encouraged to continue their own onboarding or mentoring efforts, especially those that are already well-established.

NEIEP’s goal is to support Apprentices with a consistent learning experience. The updated program maintains a firm focus on the practical realities of elevator work: safety, responsibility, and career readiness. These updates reflect the needs of the modern workplace and are designed to support a long, safe, and successful career in the trade.

Setting the Tone from Day One

One of the most exciting aspects of the updated New Hire Program is that it now offers an orientation process that gives Apprentices a full view of the journey ahead and equips them with the tools to navigate it. From understanding the structure of NEIEP’s curriculum to getting comfortable in an online classroom, new hires will now have the support they need to get started on the right foot.

This initiative helps ensure every Apprentice, regardless of background or location, starts off informed, supported, and connected to the larger IUEC and NEIEP community.

Stay tuned to the NEIEP website for more updates as the new program rolls out.
